Modi’s GIFT to the future

Gujarat’s new SEZ, Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT), is the latest in an overall push to induct smart and green technologies into India’s urban planning. The R78,000 crore mini-city, already operational and looking to welcome its first residents in March, has plans to adopt several technologies used in many of the world’s major cities to make it more efficient and eco-friendly. One such technology, radiant cooling—which involves piping chilled water through buildings to cool them—has already been adopted in Dubai to much success, and according to experiments done at Infosys’ Hyderabad building, uses around 30% less energy than conventional cooling (http://bit.ly/t2Bjyg).
