Our stunted future

Some of the most chafing statistics have been about the health of children — the appallingly high number of them who do not receive enough nutrition, leaving them underweight and stunted. A recent report on hunger and nutrition — which covered over 100 districts, especially those which performed worst according to a child development district index developed for UNICEF India — points to how challenging the problem still is. About 42 per cent of children under five years who have been surveyed are underweight, and about 58 per cent stunted.
