The widening Gulf

There was a time when India’s policy towards the Middle East was derided for being “more Arab than the Arabs”. Today, some Arab states wonder why India is at odds with them in their troubles with Syria and its ally Iran. India’s ambivalence in Syria, at a time when the Arab League and the Gulf Cooperation Council are mounting pressure on Damascus, is being interpreted by some in the Middle East as signalling a possible political tilt towards Iran amidst its rising tensions with the Arab nations.
