As a small boy, Simon Scarrow’s biggest fear was that his parents would be killed in a car crash. “They used to go out to lots of parties, and I was paranoid they’d be in an accident on the way home,” he says. “I spent a lot of my pocket money buying food and putting it under my bed, so I’d be able to feed my brothers if the worst came to the worst. “The thought of suddenly being on my own, without my mother and father, really scared me as a child.”
