Well into his presidency of the United States, Barack Obama addressed a fundraiser with a story. Abraham Lincoln, one of Obama’s heroes, was once accosted by a man seeking a patronage job. To give air to his claim, the man had Lincoln know that were it not for him, the great man would not be ensconced in the White House — he had, after all, helped get him elected. “Well, I forgive you,” said Lincoln.
