The way of all flesh

A society cannot be at peace with itself if it continues to feel guilty about the materialism that marks thought and inspires action. It will happen sooner or later for human nature triumphs in the end over imposed principles. That’s why the argument over retail trade carries a whiff of the ancient debate over swadeshi versus imports. Ignoring political expediency and economic logic, the real tension is over reconciling what most Indians yearn for with what they have been told is good for them.
