FDI in multi-brand retail is good news

The political debate over foreign direct investment in multi-brand retail has dragged on for many years now. With the UPA Government finally giving the nod to FDI in multi-brand retail, the debate has predictably taken a sharp overtone. This decision comes months after a strong public pitch in Davos was made by major international retailers on how FDI in retailing could help alleviate inflation. Union Minister for Commerce Anand Sharma had then tamped down on that pitch fairly quickly by ruling out FDI in multi-brand retail happening anytime soon.
