Rice to the fore

India emerging as the world’s top rice exporter this year is important on two counts. For long, Thailand had been the market leader, a position that India has now usurped. Also, the country had never before shipped out more than 6-6.5 million tonnes (mt) in any single year. This time, non-basmati exports alone are seen at seven mt.
