Today, non-conventional energy meets 2% of the world's energy needs. The proportion could rise fast, given the tremendous advances in solar technology. Still, for the next two decades, at least, dependence on a fuel like natural gas is only likely to increase. Gas is relatively clean, easy to transport by pipeline and increasingly abundant in the world, thanks to a slew of new discoveries of shale gas.
