Maharashtra's mess

The resignation of Maharashtra deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar has put both his uncle Sharad Pawar and chief minister Prithviraj Chavan in a spot. Sharad Pawar's party, the NCP, is run as the personal fief of the Maratha strongman. But as Pawar's interests have diversified from the confines of Maharashtra politics to the national stage and to activities as diverse as business and cricket, nephew Ajit has acquired a lot of clout over the party machinery in the state and over most of the NCP's 62 legislators.
