RTI isn’t broken, why fix it?
The recent order of the division bench of the Supreme Court has cooked the goose of the Right to Information (RTI) world. Using a PIL as its plank, the apex court has pronounced that the Information Commission is a “‘judicial tribunal’ performing functions of ‘judicial’ as well as ‘quasi-judicial’ nature and having the trappings of a court”. It has directed that persons possessing a legal background must henceforward be one among two members on every information commission’s bench.
