Signs of paralysis

The degree of disconnect between the government and public opinion at large is all too evident from its testy reaction to an article critical of the prime minister published in an American newspaper. It can be argued that the article went a bit overboard in its portrayal of Manmohan Singh. But the substance of the piece — that his earlier image has taken a beating in recent times — has been stated earlier by commentators within the country, even those who distance themselves from the opposition's acerbic attacks on him.
