Responsible mining

The Supreme Court’s order on Monday allowing a partial resumption of iron ore mining in Karnataka is welcome on two counts. First, a blanket ban was least desirable, considering that Karnataka has India’s second largest iron reserves and its output of roughly 45 million tonnes (mt) in 2009-10 represented a quarter of the country’s total production that year.
