A Bill deferred

Late last month the refurbished land acquisition Bill was referred to a group of ministers instead of heading to Parliament. It is unlikely that the Bill will turn into a law anytime soon. The proximate reason for the Bill’s “defeat” in the cabinet was the opposition of senior ministers to its provisions, especially those pertaining to compensation paid to those from whom the land is to be acquired.
