Accommodating Ikea
Policymakers have all along been insisting that global retailers—like Ikea—procure at least 30%, of what they intend to sell in India, from local manufacturers in the SME and cottage industry spaces. Latest media reports, however, suggest that the government may be open to diluting these norms with a view to making it more attractive for foreign single-brand retailers to set up shop here. So the caveat would perhaps be a much milder one, asking retailers to buy products ‘where it is feasible’ rather than the mandatory ‘must buy’.
