The Assamese leadership once cultivated the ‘Bangla Muslims’ to checkmate the Bengali Hindus. But the liberation of Bangladesh and the re-organisation of Assam in 1970s turned the tables on them. The Sylhet Referendum of July 6 and July 7, 1947, in British Assam is a forgotten chapter.
