Sorrowing lies my land
The recent bout of violence in Dhubri, Chirang, Kokrajhar and Baksa districts in Assam has so far left around 80 dead and over 4 lakh people displaced. The plight of the affected people has been deeply heartrending. Once again though it surfaces the vexed ‘illegal immigration’ issue in Assam. Depending on vested interests, opinions continue to be divided on whether ‘illegal immigration’ fuelled the violence, or communal forces masterminded it or whether the people of North-East are essentially violent — or whether there are illegal immigrants in Assam at all! Unfortunately, violence is the price that the poor and innocent pay for policies and political machinations of leaders which originated even before India’s independence.
