Fruits of democracy
In a sweeping reform unthinkable even a year ago, Myanmar has abolished pre-publication censorship of the country's media after a span of nearly five decades. The move does away with the earlier practice of submitting news reports and articles for vetting to the country's Press Scrutiny and Registration Department prior to publication. Read along with efforts to pass a new legislation to update media laws, it marks a significant departure from the previous military regime that used strict censorship to curtail criticism of the junta and its policies.
