Coal, the country's main source of commercial energy, remains mired in opacity, non-reform and worse. There's the pressing need to overhaul market design and have multiple non-captive, commercial producers in coal to boost timely supply and step up efficiency in operations. Despite having one of the largest proven deposits, we have had to increasingly resort to coal imports to meet rising demand, thanks to warped policy and the continuing public sector monopoly in mining and evacuation.
