Upon the country's Independence in 1947, Indian democracy was perceived by many, particularly in the West, as an impossible dream. Perhaps most famously Winston Churchill, an avowed colonialist, derisively conjectured that India would ''fall back quite rapidly through the centuries into the barbarism and privations of the Middle Ages''.
