In the 1999 Lok Sabha election, the BJP contested 339 seats, while in the 2004 and 2009 polls, the party vied for 364 and 424 Lok Sabha seats respectively. The number of seats contested were always much above the half-way mark required for a simple majority in Lok Sabha.
