In his Independence Day speech, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh listed growth as an important ingredient of national security and unity. He conceded that inflation was a major headache and pointed out that India's growth rate of 6.5% last year might be surpassed this year, while Europe as a whole would see zero growth.
