GDP as national security
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh hit the nail on the head when he said, in his Independence Day speech, that is was time to view economic issues as matters of national security. Even simple maths makes this clear. The difference between a 5% and a 9% GDP growth makes a R8,000 crore difference to the annual defence budget, and that’s assuming no change in the proportion of defence spending.
