How ironic: Government kills low-cost telecom services, then offers free phones to the poor

On Independence Day, August 15, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh plans to announce a sarkari scheme to gift free mobile phones to poor people. What an irony this will be. Around 30 million poor people will get a new phone with 200 minutes of free talk time, while companies that offer mobile telecom services hike their tariffs to offset the staggeringly high prices that the government proposes to charge for radio bandwidth in auctions tentatively scheduled for end-January 2013.
