Anna wanes, Congress happily dumps Lokpal

The ruling party has from the start done everything to stall the passage of the anti-corruption Bill. It has succeeded thus far. But even the BJP has contributed to delaying the Lokpal legislation. The events of the previous week — the end of ‘Operation Jantar Mantar’ by Team Anna without any tangible gains vis-à-vis the fight against corruption and the indications from within Government that the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Bill, 2011, will not come up for debate until the Winter Session of Parliament — should come as a major disappointment for all citizens who believe in the pursuit of peaceful and democratic solutions for major problems confronting the country.
