Most people may have forgotten that, back in 2004, Manmohan Singh as the newly-appointed prime minister had let it be known that he would retain the finance portfolio for himself. In the event, he was persuaded that this would be a bad idea. The logic reportedly proffered was that he should be focusing on his new job, not his last one.
