A thirsty nation
Mahi's tragic death has, quite rightly, been blamed on individual and administrative negligence. However, it also points towards the deepening water crisis in the country, spawning thousands of new borewells which sometimes become death traps for children. Water shortages are now the norm across major Indian cities, especially in peak summers. And they inevitably give rise to water mafias, who make a killing (sometimes literally as in Mahi's case) by controlling access to water.
