Ambitious Anand

Commerce minister Anand Sharma has played safe in a difficult fiscal year to restrict the give-aways in the Foreign Trade Supplement (FTP) to about the same level as in 2011-12. Convincing finance minister Pranab Mukherjee, battling a tough fisc, that higher sops could raise exports more than proportionately was a difficult exercise but Sharma has managed to retain them. To do this, he has assumed that the Indian exports that have risen 21% in the last fiscal to reach $304 billion will do better.
