National parties are losing touch

In a vibrant democracy, a strong Opposition keeps a check on the absolute power of the rulers. A fragmented and weak Opposition cannot effectively play this role. In older democracies such as the UK and the US, there are basically only two major parties. In India we have six recognised national parties and 45 State-level parties. Besides them, Independents in large numbers contest elections. This leads to a fragmented polity.
