Asking for the moon

Pakistan’s decision to play hardball with the US is as perplexing as it is disturbing. The long-term ramifications of this game are worrisome for Pakistan as well as for the region. And, because it is being played over a cause that has many interpretations, there aren’t many who are willing to buy Pakistan’s line. Ego and prestige are all very respectable sentiments. But when it comes to statecraft and strategies, these can actually be retardants. Hard-nosed and unsentimental decisions are the order of the day, based on undiluted cost-benefit analysis.
