Scrap Haj subsidy now

The Supreme Court’s directive to the Union Government to end the subsidy being extended to Haj pilgrims has come not a day soon. Given persistent calls from various sections of society, including many Muslim organisations, that the policy providing state subsidy to the annual pilgrimage should be discontinued for reasons ethical, religious and financial, it is a wonder that the Government had not acted on the sensible suggestion all these years.
