A wake-up call
There is a paradigm shift underway in manufacturing, points out The Economist. New technologies in computing, materials and processes such as three-dimensional printing are making fundamental changes in the way things are made, where they are made and by whom, whether workers or smart robots. Three dimensional printing, in which a computer-aided printing machine deposits successive layers of different materials to produce solid designs and objects, is a key exemplar of this third industrial revolution.
