A patently illicit deal

The Supreme Court’s stern admonishment of the Italian Government for striking what is clearly an illicit monetary deal with the families of the two Indian fishermen who were killed by Italian marines off the Kerala coast in February with an eye to short-circuiting the judicial process, is entirely justified. But if the Italian authorities are guilty of slyly trying to weaken the case against the killer marines by literally buying over the vulnerable families of the victims, the Congress-led Governments at the Centre and in Kerala are equally to blame for not preventing this perversity.
