Wrong prescription

The Health Ministry and, now, the Planning Commission have rightly jettisoned the proposed formula under the draft National Pharmaceuticals Pricing Policy (NPPP) for controlling the prices of essential drugs. The draft had recommended fixing the ceiling price on these drugs by taking the weighted average price of the top three derived formulation brands sold in the market. The formula is flawed, as it virtually legitimises the price charged by those at the top, in terms of market share.
