The abduction of Alex Paul Menon, collector of Chhattisgarh’s troubled Sukma district, signals an escalation in Maoist violence, and in its brazenness. In neighbouring Orissa, despite the Naveen Patnaik government’s readiness to meet its extravagant demands, the Andhra Odisha Border Special Zonal Committee of Maoists has decided that the fate of Laxmipur MLA Jhina Hikaka, abducted nearly a month ago, will be announced only on April 25, after he has been tried in the “praja court”.
