It is difficult to comprehend why a law officer representing the Union Government should have made a statement before the Supreme Court that threatens to weaken the Government’s case against the Italian marines accused of killing Indian fishermen off the Kerala coast in February. Additional Solicitor General Harin Raval told a shocked court on Friday that India had no jurisdiction to either try the accused Italian nationals or seize the merchant vessel from which the shots were fired. Since Mr Raval represents the Government, it is assumed that he was articulating the UPA regime’s position on the matter.
