Osama bin Laden said explicitly that the only way to end his jihad against the US was for them to adopt Islam. There was no other way. His confidence was of course derived from what he read in the Quran. He also derived lessons from history. Since the Soviet Union had been defeated in Afghanistan, so would the US.
