First, fix the teacher-pupil ratio

Those of us who believe that India’s schools must reflect the vision of an egalitarian society will be pleased that the Supreme Court has upheld the reservation of 25 per cent of seats in private unaided schools under the Right to Education Act. But the fact is that over 80 per cent of the children in rural India study in government schools. Therefore, while the spirit behind the reservation of seats is laudable, the priority and focus of India’s education system should be on what needs to be done to improve the quality of education in government schools, where most of our children are enrolled.
