Data on non-performing assets (NPA) of banks does not adequately capture the repayment stress experienced by corporates from a combination of rising interest rates, a slowing economy, and volatile commodity and currency price movements. If one went strictly by the official figures, the gross value of such NPAs for the banking industry, at Rs 98,000 crore as of March 2011, has actually fallen marginally to 2.3 per cent of total advances, from 2.4 per cent a year earlier.
