Not by numbers alone

The Planning Commission has reckoned 29.8 per cent of India's population to be living below poverty line. Such estimates, based on abstract definitions of poverty line that lend themselves easily to controversy and varying interpretations, hardly capture the day-to-day living conditions of people.
