A fight over numbers
Between 2004-05 and 2009-10, 52.5 million Indians ceased to be counted as poor. In all, poverty in the country came down by 7.3 percentage points in these years. These numbers, released by the Planning Commission on Monday, have kicked off a furious debate. It has been claimed the commission’s poverty lines—which are different for different states—are simply too low.
