As a result of a primary focus on income redistribution and social welfare, current policy priorities have been criticized for ignoring private capital and investment. Flagship social welfare programmes such as the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, National Rural Health Mission, Indira Awaas Yojana and the food security Bill are based on the belief that benefits of India’s growth have not trickled down to the poor.
