Playing ‘god' with cotton

There is something terribly wrong if the Agriculture Minister of a country is not informed about a decision banning the export of a major farm commodity and gets to know about it from newspersons seeking his reaction. Well, that is precisely what happened on Monday, when the Commerce Ministry issued a notification prohibiting all cotton shipments “till further orders”. It caught not just the Agriculture Minister, Mr Sharad Pawar, but even the textile industry unawares. They had every reason to be surprised.
