Indian Railways caught in a time warp
While the decadence of some places are conveyed in words, like Gibbon's account of the Roman Empire, there are some derelictions that are best seen to be believed. The Indian Railways is an example. Its rot lies not in the cliched images of human torsos sticking out of jam-packed compartments; one gets the fetid smell of the rotten institution at its most odious in the corridor of the AC First Class of Rajdhani Express, with wizened faces in almost every cabin or coupe, travelling at tickets discounted up to a half.
