It was not to be. The Lok Sabha's purposeful debate over the Lokpal, followed by a relatively quick passage of the Bill, had triggered hopes of a New Year's gift to the nation from the political class. But that hope flickered out in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday. When the Bill was disgracefully ripped up before television cameras by the appropriately named Rajniti Prasad - an MP belonging to the RJD - one couldn't have imagined a more potent symbol of where the political class stood on the idea of an ombudsman acting as a check on corruption.
