It is rare when an individual becomes the face of a government organisation. Rarer still when he hacks away at all the great sins that we expect of a public utility and invests it with some of his own great qualities — and then some more. As Elattuvalapil Sreedharan retires as the managing director of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation for what he says will be an idyllic retirement in a Kerala village, the 79-year-old leaves behind a transformed urban scenario — a public transport system that has become a pure metropolitan pleasure in the National Capital Region, with its speed, efficiency, comfort and aesthetics.
