The notion that the main opposition party, the BJP, should not touch anything the government proposes with a bargepole, appears to have been shelved for once. The two are cooperating in pushing the pension Bill. The BJP, though, has extracted its pound of flesh by including an 'assured return' in the Bill, a clause it had opposed when the NDA was in power and pushing the Bill itself. Nevertheless, by signalling its cooperation on the pension Bill, the BJP has set the ball rolling for productive discussions on other important reforms on the anvil.
