Is Britain beginning to drift away from Europe?

David Cameron gave up a continent to protect a city. That just about sums up his brave veto of the Franco-German proposal to bring in changes to the European Union treaty to save the euro. His supporters — the British financial services industry mostly — hail him as the first British Prime Minister to say ‘No’ as firmly as he did to a unified Europe. His critics —the Labour and many Conservatives — condemn him for isolating the UK from the rest of Europe. The sceptics — mostly Liberal Democrats who don’t want an early election — contend Cameron be allowed time to prove he was right.
