Old friends: Nitish Kumar & BJP
The decision by the chief minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar, to flag off L.K. Advani’s yatra against corruption should not come as a surprise. His outfit, the former Samata Party, which merged with the Janata Dal (United), was the first party to accord ‘secular legitimacy’ to the Bharatiya Janata Party in the post-Babri Masjid demolition years. Till the end of 1995, only the Shiromani Akali Dal and the Shiv Sena —known for their limited presence on the national platform ––were the BJP’s allies.
