The setting was as carefully chosen as her words. Marine Le Pen, the new leader of France’s National Front, dropped in to visit an immigrant-detention centre on the Italian island of Lampedusa this week, to alert the French to the “waves of immigration” flooding in from the Arab world. But she mixed hard talk with a disarming air of compassion.
